It’s official now. I’ve turned in the manuscript for what will likely be the last book of The Grand Illusion series, entitled Premier, which is a sequel featuring Steffan and Avraal, set roughly nine years after Contrarian. I don’t have a publication date, except that it will likely be released late in 2026 or in 2027.

For those who haven’t followed closely, Legalist, the prequel to the already published books in The Grand Illusion, has a release date of October 7, 2025.

Though I will admit I’m a bit behind on this series I just wanted to say thank you for always taking your works in new directions. I have really enjoyed this one so far.

  2. I found your explanations to be incredibly clear.

  3. Damon says:

Awesome news! I’m looking forward for one more adventure with those two. Any thoughts, on next piece of work? Thanks for the updates.

  4. Carol Landry says:

I am on a Modesitt reread binge, so very pleased to hear about the new books coming. Thank you.

  5. KevinJ says:

    Excellent news!

I always felt like there was one more story to tell about Steffan and Avril, but it’s not my opinion that matters. Glad both the author and the publisher think so too!

  6. I am very happy to hear that you have completed a sequel with Steffan and Avraal 🙂 🙂

  7. Adam says:

    This is incredibly exciting!

  8. Peter Wityk says:

This series rapidly became my favorite. I am really looking forward to two more

  9. Silentsword says:

Looking forward to this! Read the series over Christmas, loved the whole thing, and was really hoping for one more story with Steffan and Avraal.

  10. Laura A says:

Oh, fantastic! I was thinking that we were going to jump from Legalist to the prequel, so I’m delighted that we’re getting more about Steffan and Avraal. Thanks for writing it!

    1. Legalist is the prequel; Premier is the sequel about Steffan and Avraal.

      1. Laura A says:

Thanks for clarifying – I was thinking of Contrarian. Looking forward to reading Legalist in the fall!

  11. Luke says:

Wonderful news! I just saw the prequel for The Grand Illusion is on its way and was already very excited. Now I learn there is a sequel coming too!

It is fantastic to see. I love the Grand Illusion world and characters. There were so many unanswered questions at the end of the third book. It’ll be a tough wait.

  12. M Romans says:

Your last one already? I absolutely love this series and will be sad to see it end.

    1. Most likely… unless it becomes a mega best-seller.

  13. Ryan C says:

Will there be mass paperback editions for the last few books? Sad this epic will be coming to an end but I’ve absolutely loved the adventure

    1. Alas…no. Unless there’s some strange change in the economics, the only paper editions will be a trade paperbacks.

      1. Tom says:

TOR probably does not realize that the percentage of poor in this country is increasing. Although some of the electronic books are cheaper than the paperbacks the poor have a hard time buying electronic items with which to read these books. A pity, because they could learn how the country works from some “simplifications” of the US Constitutional guided politics.

  14. Not precisely on topic, but close: I was very happy to receive a copy of “Sub-Majer’s Challenge” in my mail today. Now I have to decide whether to hoard it or to read it as soon as I finish my current book (“Slow Horses”).

  15. Steven Garland says:

I had just caught up to Contrarian when Sub-Majer’s Challenge was released. With my Kobo charged up, now I’m ready to roll on Legalist.

Thank you so much for your writing. For a person who has put a serious dent in the fantasy genre, its always a joy to pick up another of your books.

  16. Alecia Flores says:

I just finished Legalist, it’s a great read! Thank you. One question, does Dominic ever get a lunch break? He eats breakfast, has lots of dinners, but never seems to eat lunch.

    1. Lunch really doesn’t fit his schedule. Sometimes, it’s like that.

  17. Brenda Pfeifer says:

I am always please to come and see what I can preorder soon! Your books are amazing and I look forward to reading each one.

  18. Lawrence Basgall says:

Sir, I have read every book you’ve ever written, and I wait in anticipation for whichever book you write.

  19. Raimo Vuopionperä says:

I liked the Legalist a lot. Luckily one can buy e-books, so do not need to wait for printed books.

As a teckie especially the hints about steamm engines development were appreciated.

Moreover, I wonder whether (as further Tech. Development) introduction of ‘simple’ (no electronics) diesel engine should be possible within the restrictions of ‘Grand Illusion world’. One could even have turbocharging without electronics).

I cannot wait for the next book ‘Premier’ …

As I am big fan of your books there is some consolidation for the waiting time, as ‘The Last of the First’ has 30th of June 2026 as publication Date (already preordered from ebooks.com).

  20. Ryan D Surface says:

Just Fininshed the Legalist and very much enjoyed it! Thank you. I wouldn’t hate another book with Dominic and Aelyn 😉

  21. Anne M Robertson says:

Just finished Legalist. Brilliant and I loved it. Can’t wait for the next one in the series.
