October 24th Question

In the Recluce chronology, it lists “The Vice Marshal’s Trial” as happening in year 42. That doesn’t seem possible, that so much would be forgotten a mere 50 years later when _From the Forest_ is said to begin. It feels more like hundreds of years have passed than mere decades. At the least, the children of the original Anglorians should still be around and remember the early days and the stories of their parents. My question is, now that you’ve fleshed out a little bit more of the early years, how would you re-date things? (I will add, I think your editor was both right and wrong and saying to leave mystery of the early beginnings unwritten. That’s tantalizing in the first read, but for the second read is nice to have the puzzle pieces to put into place and not the empty holes)

At present, I have no intention of re-dating events. I will point out that the degree to which past events are recalled by later generations depends on several factors: (1) how many people are involved; (2) how difficult survival has been; (3) who, if anyone, is recording or recalling those events and whether they have the media and time to preserve such narratives; (4) who doesn’t want certain narratives to be recalled. By the time Alyiakal becomes a Mirror Lancer, he’s effectively the fourth generation.
