November 12th Question

For your older books, would you rather people buy new, or from a used bookstore? I want to make sure I’m supporting authors, but if you receive basically nothing from the sale of a new copy of an older book, then the higher cost of a new book might not be worth it. I have no idea how compensation in the publishing world works, especially on older books. Thanks for the guidance!

If you buy a new copy of an old book from a bookstore like Barnes & Noble or even Amazon (if it’s labeled as new), the author gets royalties. If you buy it used, from whomever, the author doesn’t. Obviously, authors (me included) prefer readers buy new books, but I’m well aware that new books are expensive and that not everyone can afford them, and I’d rather have them read used books of mine than not read my work at all.
