August 13th Question

Will there ever be a map available showing Cyador with the Forest bound? It’s getting difficult guessing Post locations.

I’ve tried to persuade Tor to provide a map for the Alyiakal books, and even provided a rough draft, but given the worsening economics of publishing and the fact that each Recluce book does not sell millions of copies, future maps are highly unlikely.

I stopped myself being amazed that your books are not selling about the million volume mark, in the US at least. I suspect that is more related to the gradual disappearance of printed communications than a matter related to your writing ability. This seems to indicate that printed books will disappear.

I know that texts used for teaching are still required reading in some higher education establishments; but are these all available as e-books? Do professors ensure that the material to be studied are copies of the originals and not abridged copies of some type or other? Easton Press used to advertise their printing to be of the original texts but it turned out otherwise when I eventually came to re-read the classics with my children.

If no one reads how will they be able to be examined: will all examinations be verbal eventually?

Would you consider posting the rough draft on here, if they are unlikely to be published ever?

    1. I can’t, because I used the older copyrighted maps as the basis for the personal maps I made for the book.

Bummer. I also loved your maps, and find that in new books, as well as re-reads, I’d thumb back to a map, to find location, wherever the novel was leading me. I would happily purchase poster size maps of recluse, if any market developed out of these commentaries.

I also blame Tor a bit. Their email newsletter is so focused on being culturally trendy that it will have tons of articles about rereads or rewatches of shows, many of which aren’t even based on Tor books, but rarely even a mention, let alone an actual synopsis of Mr. M’s books.

It also really annoys me that every Christmas you see box sets of Game Of Thrones books when the series will obviously never even finish but never bundles of Recluse books, which I would rebuy because my oldest paperbacks are starting to fall apart. It would also bring new readers to the series, but nope.

That said it also seems true that the newest generation including those in my family just don’t have the attention span to read a full book anymore.
