Latest Reading
On the way to and from World Fantasy Convention I got in some more reading, because I do a great deal of reading on airplanes, given that it takes at least two and sometimes three legs to get anywhere but Salt Lake City from Cedar City. I finally got around to reading Friedman's The World is Flat, which is well-written and intriguing. It has a number of good points, but what he doesn't seem to emphasize enough, it seemed to me, is that the degree of "flatness" is almost inversely related to expertise and individuality, including local customs. I finished Nathalie Mallet's debut novel, The Princes in the Golden Cage, and found it a quick and pleasant read. I also read Charlie Stross's Glasshouse and Neil Gaiman's Smoke and Mirrors, which was billed as "short fictions and illusions" and which left me incredibly disappointed and with the sense that he should stick to novels and graphic novels.
